September has begun with cool nights and warm days. I love it! Windows are always open and blankets are at the ready for the evenings. The garden, even through nibbles and blight, has been so beautiful. Earlier this summer it seemed as the deer would enjoy the garden for the rest of the season. They've seemed to have slowed down on their consumption and some things are doing well. I decided to take a mostly hands off approach and it seems to be a good thing. This plant below was growing and flowering in my compost bin!
Plants are mostly going to do what they want to do if given a chance. Grow! My sweet alyssum has been a happy camper all season and happily plants itself all over. In a recent post I was a bit unsure if I’d continue to garden. I most certainly will. How can I not?! I will of course lean towards things that maybe the deer want find as appealing.
I’m so in love with my dwarf cosmos. I already have two others I know I’ll grow next year. They don’t get very tall and flop over which is usually what I don’t like about cosmos.
This is my moonflower that never opened! There are still a few more buds and I will be watching in hopes that it will open! I was so surprised to see the buds. The deer had chewed it so many times and I just basically told the deer they can have it. It started looking shabby and I was pruning it when I noticed the buds. I then made sure to move it before the deer would get it.
**EDIT. One bloomed! It’s so beautiful and smells amazing!
The daylight will continue to decrease and things will wind down soon enough. For now I’ll enjoy the sweetness of September.
I hope your month is off to a good start.
I loved reading about your dwarf cosmos and the resilient moonflower. It's a beautiful reminder of the importance of persistence! I featured your delightful post in Sunday Scroll. What will you try planting next?
So lovely, Dana. Thanks for sharing.
I'm glad you're going to keep gardening. There will always be challenges, but there will always be beauties and delights.
